Before this rock club came along in the 1990s, there was nowhere in the Lower East Side to see young, struggling bands playing their hearts out for free. But thanks to a tacky renovation and the addition of a cover charge on most nights, Arlene's Grocery is definitely not what it used to be. Some good bands do still perform here however, and drinks remain cheap. It can get overly crowded on the weekends, and quite smoky as well. Drinks average $5. Cash only.
