Founded by a street vendor, this edgy St. Mark's shop fits right into the neighborhood. It carries an eclectic mix of authors, from Bukowski and Hemingway to Proust and Zola. Do not bother searching for such lightweight authors as Danielle Steele or Sydney Sheldon. However, you may find Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book or The Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky instead. There is also a small selection of compact discs for sale.
