A casual, fine French restaurant run by the students of the French Culinary Institute, L'Ecole serves a four (sometimes five) course $28 prix fixe feast that is often as good as the city's most expensive meals. Even better, the crowd is not nearly as stuffy, and the staff is earnest and passionate. The menu changes constantly, so it is always worth returning. The school is headed by retired celebrity chefs Andre Soltner and Jacques Pepin, among others.
