Nominated for six Tony Awards this international sensation was inspired by the stories of Sholom Aleichem and was first presented in 1964 introducing the memorable songs, "If I Were a Rich Man, "Matchmaker, Matchmaker", "Sunrise, Sunset", and "To Life". Set in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, Russia, in 1905, Fiddler's main concern, in this bittersweet tale, is the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman (Harvey Fierstein), his wife, Golde (Rosie O'Donnell), and their five daughters to cope with their harsh existence under the rule of the Czars. This latest production at the Minskoff Theater, starring Harvey Fierstein as Tevye the Milkman (taking over from Alfred Molina), is a brilliant rendering of the timeless classic. By now, the score is completely ingrained in the audience psyche; and this vigorous production makes the most of the memories, and then some. Of particular note is the choreography, the dancing that is nearly violent in its intensity and sends charges of electricity through the audience. This classic has music by Jerry Bock, book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, is under the direction of David Leveaux.
