The first Saturday after the summer solstice (late June), the Coney Island boardwalk is the scene for some seaside craziness. Celebrants dress as mermaids, mer-men and even mer-babies, in a cross between a family outing, a Brooklyn Mardi Gras and a drag queen festival. The food is plentiful and the people watching even better. It is free to view the parade, but for USD10 you can get a seat in KeySpan Park and see special entertainment, judging and a ribbon cutting ceremony. The tentative date for the event in 2006 is June 24.
