Mamma Mia!, a surefire hit, has been playing to sell-out audiences for several years. Mamma Mia is stringing together a large number of ABBA songs might alone have guaranteed a success, Catherine Johnson, the author of the book, managed to produce a buoyant, celebratory piece which contains both irony and soppiness, the tacky and the wholesome, and which bounces 22 ABBA numbers into the audience which are cleverly integrated into the story line and presented like a game in which the audience tries to guess which song is coming, as the plot sneaks up on and finally snares a well-known number. The prolific and wonderfully stirring singing, the highly energetic choreography, the superb lighting and the Lycra costumes create a delightful evening of sheer fun and pleasure. That's really a mini ABBA concert tagged to the show.
Mamma Mia! is a phenomenally successful playing that appeals to all ages.
