Founded by legendary theater impresario Joseph Papp in 1967, the Public Theater produces productions at six locations, including new and classic musicals, plays, and Shakespeare at the Anspacher Theatre on Lafayette St; free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theate; and musicians and spoken word artists at Joe's Pub. Collectively, Public Theater productions have been honored with 38 Tony Awards, 135 Obies, 37 Drama Desk Awards, 18 Lucille Lortel Awards and 4 Pulitzer Prizes. The Public Theater continues to bring great shows to the city including "A Chorus Line", "The Pirates of Penzance", "The Tempest","Take Me Out" and "Caroline, Or Change."
