The Kitchen was started in the 1970s by performance and film artists Woody and Steina Vasulka. “A center for video, music, dance, performance and literature,” it has since become a city institution through its support of avant-garde performance and art. Performances and talks are held regularly, as well as programs for families. Big names who have played there in the past include Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Bill T. Jones, Eric Bogosian, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman and Vernon Reid.
